This work represents the extension of a previous investigation of the 1783 lethal landslide–tsunami, provoking more than 1500 casualties in the coastal town of Scilla. The effects of the tsunami are assessed here over a wider domain and compared with the available observations from historical reports. The eastern end of Sicily (Capo Peloro) is the most affected site in the far-field. A tentative reconstruction of the coeval topography of the area is also realized, with interesting results.

To issue precise and timely tsunami alerts, detecting the propagating tsunami is fundamental. The most used instruments are pressure sensors positioned at the ocean bottom, called Ocean-Bottom Pressure Gauges (OBPGs). In this work, we study four different techniques that allow to recognize a tsunami as soon as it is recorded by an OBPG and a methodology to calibrate them. The techniques are compared in terms of their ability to detect and characterize the tsunami wave in real time.

The capability of the present PFEM model has been validated against a historical event, i.e. 2013 Cà Mengoni landslide, Italy. we found that the multi-slip surface mechanism can be accounted for by our model. Indeed, the numerical results show that the slip-surface obtained by the dynamic analysis is different from the one obtained by static analysis, mainly due to the redistribution of stresses. We have shown that the weakening process is important to landslide behaviour during motion.

A new method is presented to analyse coastal tide-gauge recordings in the period range typical of local seiches, coastal shelf resonances and tsunamis. The method computes the instantaneous slope IS, the reconstructed sea level (RSL), and the control function (CF), that are shown to follow the Student's t distribution (IS and RSL) and the Beta distribution (CF) functions. As an example, the method is applied to data from the tide-gauge station of Syracuse, Italy.

We estimate the vulnerability of buildings and population exposure to tsunamis for the city of Alexandria, Egypt. The study is based on the worst-case tsunami scenario technique and focusses only on tsunamis induced by earthquakes. The results show that a 15km2 area can be inundated to the south-west of the port of Dekhila. More than 165 000 residents could be exposed and over 13400 buildings could be affected, hundreds of which could sustain damage, ranging from light damage to total collapse.
